A Homegrown Café Makes Its Mark On Newtown, CT

With real food at the forefront and a niche to be filled in the java fueled northern Fairfield County town of Newtown,
Café Xpresso is on a mission to feed and fuel busy, hungry people who want to eat well and add the consumption of fresh roasted coffee and from-scratch foods made with real ingredients to their culinary lifestyle. In March of 2015, Route 25 commuters and local residents were introduced to Bob and Marie Schlump, the passionate proprietors of their dream come true; a coffee house, bakery, and restaurant all wrapped into one charming neighborhood café.

In keeping with the café’s namesake, Café Xpresso is brewing some serious coffee. The coffee beans are sourced from two premier roasters in CT who roast the selected coffee beans in small batches and deliver weekly, guaranteeing the highest standard of coffee set by Café Xpresso owners and baristas.

“Our brewed coffee is made in top of the line brewers that ensure consistent coffee brewing and flavor extraction for that perfect, robust cup of coffee every time,” explains Bob, “And the milk that is steamed for espresso drinks is from Arethusa Farm Dairy in Litchfield.”

Café Xpresso’s talented kitchen is comprised of CIA alum and a seasoned pastry chef, in addition to its owners’ added culinary prowess. But the real magic begins with fresh, quality, locally sourced ingredients and artisan products. The menu is a vibrant and seasonal mix of hearty sandwiches, scrumptious salads, house-made soups, decadent baked goods and morning pastries, fruit smoothies, breakfast sandwiches, and their over-the-top weekend waffle menu. Café Xpresso slow-roasts their meats, turkeys, and chickens and prepares all of the spreads and dressings in-house.  Artisan bread from Bob and Marie’s favorite New York City bakeries are used to make the sandwiches and real NY kettle boiled Bagels also make the trek across the border.

Fall menu highlights and signature dishes include; Pumpkin Crème Brulee Latte made with locally roasted and fresh ground espresso, white chocolate sauce, pumpkin and vanilla spices, freshly steamed Arethusa milk, real whipped cream, caramel drizzle and house-made caramel crunchies; maple, bacon, egg and cheese sandwich
on a brioche roll; Fat Back Jack sandwich stuffed with sliced ham, bacon, pepper-jack cheese, romaine, house oven-roasted tomatoes, pickles and mayo on whole grain bread; The Waldorf between two slices of semolina raisin fennel bread filled with oven-roasted chicken salad with dried cranberries, granny smith apples, celery and pecans, and tossed with homemade Waldorf dressing; and a Turkey Popeye Salad with Café Xpresso roasted turkey, dried cranberries, blueberries, sunflower seeds and goat cheese over mixed greens and leafy spinach with a raspberry vinaigrette.

Café Xpresso is a delightful country respite. Its brick façade gives way to a bright and airy contemporary coffee bar and eatery framed in dark wood furnishings and window counter seating. The décor is that of colorful chalkboard specials, retail shelves filled with artisan teas, coffee and sweets, and large bakery displays overflowing with black & white cookies, fudge brownies, seasonal fruit tarts, and fanciful cakes.

In addition to breakfast, lunch, coffee and dinner on the go, Café Xpresso offers their fresh and fabulous food for catered parties and corporate meetings, as well as cake orders for special occasions and crafted menus to suit any event.

Café Xpresso is open 7 days a week and is located at 150 South Main Street (Rt 25) in Newtown.
